Whenever I read or hear one artist being compared to another I'm often disappointed when I don't hear it, or it may keep from me listening if I dislike the artist they are being compared to. I try not to make comparisons when describing music on Aimless Skylarking, yet I'm guilty of it at times. Sometimes it's unavoidable, like when I first heard NYC based artist Jennie Vee's dreamy shoegaze track 'Die Alone'. A few folks on The Joy Formidable Facebook fan page recommended her work, and when I listened, I heard the shoegazy sounds the group is famous for sharing. And then I heard Jennie's voice, I did a double take because I thought Ritzy Bryan was singing. I listened again, and again, and then bought the 5-track EP.
Comparisons might be initially flattering, and might help to get some people to listen, but ultimately I don't think they are terribly fair to the artist. Jennie's got the shoegaze sound down, there's no doubting that, and has a lovely voice to go along with it. Listen on those merits. Stream 'Die Alone' below, it's my Song of the Day!
