In today's email is an artist I'd never heard of, London based Sasha Siem. Actually, that's not true, the day before, Stereogum premiered her latest single, 'So Polite', and I'd have to say I was responsible for at least 30 plays of the song. When I first heard it I was fascinated by it, and I hoped the song would soon go public so I could feature it here. Today's email from her press agent announcing the single did just that, and made my day. For those who don't know Sasha Siem, she is a London based artist who has composed for the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. In 2010 she won a prestigious British Composer Award.
On 'So Polite', I'd be lying if I said the orchestration is the star. It's damn lovely mind you, but Sasha's message and vocal delivery makes what could have been formal and stilted into something slightly unhinged and gloriously mad. There's also a playful catlike quality here, elegant and graceful in movement, yet be mindful of the razor sharp claws. I'm anxious for more, as you should be. 'So Polite' is taken from Sasha's upcoming debut album, which will be released on March 2 via Blue Plum Records. There's also a London date on the schedule at The Lexington on March 25. Stream 'So Polite' below and become enchanted with Sasha Siem.
