Reaching back for an older track today, one that I bookmarked but ultimately got caught up in the madness of end of the year lists. Desert Stars' track 'Hamster Wheel' is my introduction to the band, and it's a great first impression. I have an affinity for all shapes of shoegaze, artists who stand right in the middle of it, and some who dabble in it, veering in and out of it for great effect. It doesn't matter at all, when I hear the word, I'm instantly interested. I've not spent much time with Desert Stars' back catalog to know where they stand, but this first taste is clearly a shoegaze effort; well, with a few dashes of psych rock sprinkled in, and it's a delicious taste at that. Swirling guitars envelop the vocal melodies save for a few euphoric moments while the marching drum beat keeps it all in line, ready to burst through the clouds out into the bright light. Introductions should always be this special.
Desert Stars are Janelle Best, Eric Altesleben, Kevin Bookhamer, and Chris Carlone. They're based out of Brooklyn. Stream the alluring 'Hamster Wheel' below, it's my Song of the Day!
