Yesterday I reached back 2-3 months for my Song of the Day, today I'm reaching back even further to last summer. Back then, I happened across Painted Zeros, a Brooklyn 3-piece playing a brand of dreamy garage pop/punk music, bookmarked and then promptly forgot about. Just recently, I've listened to their 5-track EP many times over, falling just as hard as I did when I first heard the drop dead dreamy opening track way back then, 'This American Life'. Then the next track rockets off in a different direction, it's a startling turn, but not unwelcome.
They've coined their sound as dreampunx, and I'm not going to deny that most accurate description, except for the opener. There's a lot of dreamy here, particularly in Katie's vocals, but there's also gobs of snarling contrast to keep it from being a cloying disaster. It's a fantastic effort that's left me wanting more. Painted Zeros are Katie, Jared, and Jim. Stream the lovely 'This American Life' below, it's my Song of the Day!
They're on tour right now, they'll be very close to me, Nashville which is about a 2 hour drive, but perhaps a bit too far away for a week night. I hate that as I'd like to see them perform. Tour dates are below.
