Tip of the hat to our friends over at Don't Need No Melody for the introduction to the Norwich, UK based 4-piece, Claws. Our tastes in music intersect quite often, and this is one of those times. Since the introduction last week, I've not been able to quit listening to the band's latest EP. Why? Well, in 97 seconds, Claws managed to encapsulate every thing I loved about music of the early 80's, that is until hair metal took a big shit on it all. Nostalgia can be a real drag sometimes, and comparisons are dangerous, but the lead track, 'To Be A Goth' could have been on the soundtrack to Valley Girl or Sixteen Candles, and not been out of place. The sound of the guitars, the attitude, hell, the whole vibe of it all smacks of the 80's.
The band calls their sound surf-indie-punk, but I'm calling it bounce around fun. The EP doesn't beg for a replay, it demands not just one, but many more. Stream 'To Be A Goth' below, it's my Song of the Day!
Claws are Josie Steward (Vocals/Guitar), Morgan Williams (Guitar), Matt Howells (Bass), and Duncan Baker (Drums). Their new EP, No Sleep, is out now for the low low price of free, but don't be a cheapskate, pitch in a few coins because it's great music.
