Evaluating compilations can be tricky, especially when it's being compiled by a new label. With some known entities, those whose taste I trust, I'll spend more time getting to know each track. With an unknown, if the first few tracks don't catch my ear, I'm probably not going to spend much time on the rest of the tracks. I have to move on, it's the plight of a music blogger, especially when the inbox is overflowing.
That said, a new label, Citrus City Records, submitted their first compilation a few days back, and I just got around to listening to a few tracks today. What I heard in the first few tracks was strong enough to listen on, and I'm glad I did because I found 'Bloom' by Strange Bodies, the 5th track. After one listen, I was captivated by the guitar tone, the lyrics, and hazy delivery. It's intimate and warm, the kind of song I'd want to hear with a few friends in a small room. I've listened 10 times or more, and just might listen 10 more tonight. Now I'm anxious to hear more from Strange Bodies.
Strange Bodies is Joel Blanken from Asheville, North Carolina. Stream the dreamy 'Bloom' below, it's my Song of the Day.
