How far do you travel for artists/bands you want to see perform? I live in North Alabama, and we just don't get too many touring bands stopping here. It doesn't make much sense given the location, Nashville and Birmingham are far more fruitful stops. So, I have to travel to see the bands/artists I want to see, 90 minutes to Birmingham and Nashville, 3.5 hours to Memphis and Atlanta. Memphis and Atlanta require a weekend, Birmingham and Nashville are doable on a work night, but the conditions must be right because my 7am to 4pm day job isn't as flexible as I'd like.
That said, a few Sundays back, I had tickets for The Districts show at the Bottletree in Birmingham, but was unable to attend because life conspired against me. The long drive, late start time of 9pm, and two support acts would have made for a longer night than I wanted, or needed. Plus, the venue, an absolute favorite of mine, seemingly never got anything kicked off on time, 9pm usually meant 9:15 or so.
That night, Pine Barrons and Avers opened for The Districts. I was aware of both bands, and had listened to a few selections here and there, but hadn't had the time for a really long listen for either band. That is until now, Avers new track, 'Vampire' stopped me in my tracks and I've been unable to quit playing it over and over. It has this perfect combination of sun kissed spacey sounds -- dashes of shoegaze, dream pop, and psych rock -- that makes it overwhelmingly irresistible. I'm kicking myself for missing that show now! Join me in streaming 'Vampire', it's my Song of the Day!
