Caitlin Pasko - Barking Dog
NYC based artist Caitlin Pasko was stunned by the sudden loss of her father, only to be met with another harrowing challenge, the end of a relationship. One such loss can break a person, piling on is nightmarish and just isn't fair. Yet, she managed to capture the anguish found in those losses in the form of a new album, Glass Period. The album, her first since 2010, and the first under her name will be released February 10, 2017. 'Barking Dog' is the first single, stark and lovely, find it below.
Ali Holder - Declaration of Love
If you read Ali Holder's Facebook page, the first sentence mentions her unforgettable voice. And that's why I keep returning to listen in. The Texas based artist's folky country stylings are refined and composed without a hint of showy attitude. Her pliable voice could blur many genre lines, but it seems at home singing folk and country tunes, and I'm entirely smitten. I'm not sure what she's up to, but this is the 4th release in as many months. That's not a complaint, at all, more please, Ali! Give 'Declaration of Love' a long listen below.
The Courtneys - Silver Velvet
It took about 10 seconds to know I was going to like The Courtneys new track, 'Silver Velvet.' Then when the vocals came in at 20 seconds in, deeper emotions, yes, love took the wheel. All sorts of bouncing around, toe tapping, and head bobbin' unadulterated fun took place. The Vancouver based power-pop trio have a new full length, II, coming February 17, 2017 on Flying Nun Records. It's certainly going to be on many wishlists, mine included. Now, go have some fun with the lead track, 'Silver Velvet', below.
Beauty School - Ghost Beach
Chicago quartet Beauty School captured my ear earlier this year with the endearing pop masterpiece 'Pushover' with promises of a debut EP in the near future. That time is now, the band's debut EP, Ghost Beach, is in the wild for all of us to enjoy on many digital retailers. The band calls the collection, a 5-song elegy to summer, and follows up on that incredible promise they showed earlier this year. 'Star Sign' is the perfect introduction to their sound, listen in right here.
Elise Davis - Pretty Girl
If I had to guess, the submission inbox for most music bloggers is an absolute horror show. Many of us are hobbyists, and sometimes life just gets in the way of such things. So that's why I'm late to share Nashville alt-country artist, Elise Davis's work. Her new LP, The Token, is out now in many different formats right now. When I listened to the 14 track affair, one song stuck with me, 'Pretty Girl'. With wistful lyrics like these, delivered by Elise's gorgeous vintage country voice, how could it be bad?
"Pretty girl don't be sad/I hope you don't think of me too bad/It’s not a game that you lost/Just a bullet that you dodged/Train wreck that you got off/Trains gonna wreck and you got off"
"Tonight when I get in his car and I'm looking out the window/I'm thinking about that girl at home just crying in her pillow/And I wish that that was me/I wish that I was free"
Totally - Falling Apart
Seems like every time I turn around, several new London based bands emerge. It's an overwhelming task to try to keep track of it all. So, when I see that mavens of indie cool, Art is Hard Records, are working with new London 5-piece Totally, my interest is piqued. The band formed in late 2015, spit out two lo-fi demos, gigged all over London, amassing a legion of fans. For their Art is Hard Pin Pal Club release, the band took to the studio for the first time and captured what has made them the talk of the town. Yeah, all this makes me say is "More more more!" Stream 'Falling Apart' below.
Highasakite - Samurai Swords
At this point in the year, I'm bereft of any creativity. Some would say that's a year round problem for Aimless Skyarking, and I won't argue, but I'm in dire need of a break to recharge. Yet, here I am, listening to this beautifully composed acoustic stunner and I can't think of a damn thing to say about it. Norway’s Highasakite have given their single ‘Samurai Swords’ the acoustic treatment and it's just a joy to listen to, a knockout. And of course, I am here to share it with you, my friends in music. The track is taken from their just released EP on Propeller Recordings. Give it a spin below.
