A lifetime ago I lived in Dallas. The city shaped me in the three years I lived there, and is forever etched in my mind as my real home. Yet, when I left, I knew I might not ever make it back, and I haven't been. Returning home is never easy, even when every memory of the place has faded. But I have a reason for a homecoming now, and that's to see Dallas area native Claire Morales perform.
Last year, Claire submitted her debut work, Amaranthine, a folky rock LP to Aimless Skylarking for review. It seems I'm always behind with submissions here, and her email was almost lost in the shuffle, but I tucked it away and kept returning to it. Even as a fan of folk rock, I wasn't quite sure what to do with it, but I was entirely fascinated with her big voice and the stories she told. I eventually got around to including a track from the album in a playlist, and since, I have been eager to hear anything and everything she creates.
Since then, Claire's been busy. She collaborated with another Aimless Skylarking favorite, Jena Pyle, on fantastic covers of Patsy Cline and the Everly Brothers (also with Ariel Hartley). Toss in a Nancy Sinatra cover with Dalton Kane for a pretty full year of work. But, she wasn't finished, a full LP of material with Daniel Markham arrived on Halloween. And currently, she's collaborating with Jena on an EP of new material.
Claire and her band are planning studio time this spring to record their new album, All That Wanting. Until then, Claire has shared a live version of a track destined for the new LP, 'Wildest Dreams'. When I spoke to Claire, she said the new album would be much more rockin' with 60s/70s inspired rock 'n roll vibes. After hearing this first offering, I can't wait for the full album.
