After lending his talents on the road and in the studio to numerous artists such as Marissa Nadler, Strand of Oaks, Lower Dens, and The War on Drugs, Carter Tanton has offered a new LP of solo material. He wrote the material in England as a relationship ended in one long sitting, each song feeding the next. He returned to the states to record the collection, and this first offering, 'Twentynine Palms' featuring blog favorite Sharon Van Etten is as gorgeous as they come.
I've been aware of Chesterfield, England's Trash band for a while now but haven't had the opportunity to give them some space on Aimless Skylarking. That changes now with the band's latest single, 'Workout'. They classify their sound as the tongue in cheek "snacker pop", but for us, it's spot on sing along indie pop. Listen in below.
I play fantasy football, or did for several years before Aimless Skylarking took up much of my free time. The league I was in was a fan of the TV show, The League, a comedy show about a fantasy football league. One of our favorite characters on the show was the always stoned and aloof out of work musician Taco (Jon Lajoie). He was comedy gold. Little did I know his serious musical work was this good, it's hard to deny a perfect melody.
Seems I'm late to the Eliza Shaddad game. All my favorite English blogs have been praising the London artist's beautiful voice and the stories she tells, but I've not had the chance to stop for a long listen. Now that I have, I'm stunned. Eliza's latest 'Run' is a warning to her lover, "I must warn you, get as far away from me/I'm trying to warn you, get as far as you can be." Many of us don't heed a warning such as that, love makes us do strange things. I hope to catch a performance when I return to England in May.
When I sort through my inbox and listen to submissions, I have to be gripped quickly. Brixton based Bryde did just that with her dynamic voice on the brooding 'Help Yourself'. It's pure mysterious beauty. She's going to be in Nashville in June, I believe I will be free that night.
Tangerine is a Seattle-based rock band, comprised of sisters Marika and Miro Justad, and Toby Kuhn formed in 2013. Their latest EP, Sugar Teeth is out now on Swoon Records. The lead single, 'Sunset' is a toe tapping head bobbing slice of fun. If this a fusing of rock and roll with R&B, 90s slacker rock, and chart pop, sign me up for more.
Dia is the project of composer and performer, Danielle Birrittella. Her debut EP, Tiny Ocean, will be released this spring. True to form, I skipped over the suggested song and went for a deeper cut and found gold with the lovely 'Synchronized Swimming'. Contemplative road trip songs are favorites, and this feels like a drive across the desert.
When one project comes to end, jump right into the next one. Two members of the now defunct North Carolina surf-rock band Daddy Issues did just that when their band went their separate ways late last year. This time they switched instruments with drummer Joshua Johnson taking over guitar duties and Lindsey Sprague picking up a pair of drum sticks for their garage rock band, Wahya's. Their latest release is on French DIY label Six Tonnes De Chair Records. It seems they've not missed a beat, listen in to 'Third Eye' below.
I know very little about Yung other than that they're from Denmark and they have an LP, A Youthful Dream, coming out in June on Fat Possum Records. I also know this song is fantastic, it took about 30 seconds to decide that. I'm anxious to hear more.
