Last weekend, I flew up to Pittsburgh to visit some old friends. Mainly just to get away, and to see my friends, but honestly, the city is such fun and becoming a home away from home for me. However, one thing was missing from my 3 previous visits to the city, live music. I was in luck though, this trip just so happened to be the same weekend Lydia Loveless was to perform at Club Cafe. Since I'd photographed her once before, Nashville in February, I knew I had to do so again. I let me friends know I was visiting, bought my plane ticket, and secured a photo pass. Stream my favorite Lydia song, 'To Love Somebody' below while checking out my photos from the show.
A few weeks back, I photographed Banditos at Yellowhammer Brewing. I tinkered with the photos that weekend, but was uninspired by what I saw. Then I got busy at work and around the house, setting them aside for another day. I revisited the photos this weekend and found they weren't as bad as I thought them to be (they never are), and managed to edit close to 30 photos. Here are the best of the lot.
I usually don't include covers or remixes here, but make an exception every now and then. Today's Song of the Day is an exception because I'm a fan of Lydia Loveless, and I think her take on Prince's 'I Would Die 4 U' is quite good. It almost sounds like it could her song. The song will be available only in independent record stores on April 18th, 2015 as part of Record Store Day 2015. On the flipside, Cory Branan takes on 'Under the Cherry Moon'. Guess what? It'll be pressed on purple vinyl. Stream 'I Would Die 4 U' below, it's my Song of the Day!
I've been trying to catch up with Lydia Loveless' live act for a while now. After hearing her LP, Somewhere Else, early last year, seeing her was a must. Something about her hard rocking country confessional style that captured my attention. I missed a show in Birmingham, a record store performance, and a festival near Auburn for a number of reasons, nothing I can recall at the moment. There were other near misses too, but those in my own state really sting, especially since I ranked Somewhere Else as one of my favorite albums of 2014. Those work night shows after a 90 minute drive to Nashville or Birmingham are killers though.
Anyway, all of that changed when I caught her act Saturday night at the High Watt in Nashville. The room was near capacity, and with my camera in hand, I took a spot just to the right of the microphone. I photographed for 3 songs, then tucked my camera in its bag, and settled in for one of the more electric performances I've seen in a while. Energetic and fun, even profane at times, Lydia is a natural on stage. Lydia and band turned in a fantastic performance from beginning to end. I'm anxious to hear more new material, and even see her live again. Listen to my favorite track from Somewhere Else, 'To Love Somebody' and check out my photos below.
